The Importance of Stretching

Bend over, touch your toes and hold for thirty seconds. You stretched, and you’re done, right? If only it were that easy.

While stretching is an integral part of any exercise routine, how we stretch will vary from person to person. Different techniques fall under the umbrella of stretching, including dynamic, static, foam rolling, massage therapy devices, and yoga poses. All contribute to increasing flexibility.

We need to be flexible so that we can work out through a full range of motion. Most injuries occur when your body is trying to move through a variety of actions it isn’t comfortable with.

Knowing where we need to improve our flexibility is essential. Sitting at a desk all day can lead to tight hip flexors or hamstrings. Poor posture can lead to rounded, forward shoulders, which decreases shoulder mobility. Reduced ankle mobility will affect squats while you workout and can lead to other joint issues further up your legs.

It’s never too late to work on and improve flexibility. Like most things being consistent is the key to success. You’ll want to stretch at least two to three times per week to see results.

If you’re not sure where to start or what technique is right for you, schedule a session with a trainer. They will be able to assess where your weaknesses are and get you on the path to a more flexible and healthier you.
